Our History
In the Beginning
The Mathoura District and Servicemen’s Bowling Club was officially opened on September 17th, 1966. It comprised of a large lounge, ladies and gents amenities, locker area, cool room, bar and small kitchen.
Bowls proved popular with Mathoura’s sports loving population and in order to expand its membership, the club introduced ‘learner days’ whereby new players received instruction on the art of bowling and its rules. Player numbers increased as did their enthusiasm. Lights were introduced to allow for night bowls and by September 1969, playing under lights had become a regular affair.
A team was entered into the Campaspe Valley Bowling Association, pennant contest, in section two, in the club’s inaugural year of competition. The Bowling Club was jubilant after their win over Moama in their first tournament.
Once established in the bowls arena, the club turned its attention to obtaining a liquor licence which was acquired in October, 1972. Three poker machines were purchased as well as a change in trading hours.
In June, 1973, the club began considering the possibility of extending membership to non-playing members and the introduction of social members. A meeting was held to allow non-playing members and associate members to join the club.
The club’s operation continued so well that by July, 1974, it was able to pay out the bank loan on the building. In 1975, a sub-committee was elected to investigate issues involved with staffing, and building facilities. A bar steward was appointed and awarded to Barry Turner who became the club’s first permanent employee.
In June, 1978 the club secured a loan to construct a new building. The new premises was opened on Australia Day weekend, 1979, closely followed by an additional green.
The club now has excellent facilities that consist of a Bistro, Bar, Sports Lounge, Function Rooms, Bowling Greens and Kids Playroom. It also boasts a free camping space behind the club with an amenities block and pump station.
